Cruise Ships

Oh 6 January 2010, Prime Minister Dean Barrow announced on the radio that cruise ships were coming to Placencia, that Village residents had been consulted, and wanted cruise ship tourism.

We hadn't, and as proved by a petition of Village residents eligible to vote in Village Council elections, we don't want cruise ship tourism in Placencia.

Opposition to cruise ship tourism includes the Placencia chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association, the Placencia Tour Operators Association and the Association of Protected Area Management Organizations (APAMO).

Placencia Village residents also soundly rejected cruise ship tourism at a meeting on the issue held by the Placencia Village Council on 5 October 2010 and a consultation sponsored by the national Belize government on 22 October 2010.

Cruise ships will simply bring too many problems including environmental degradation, crowding out of Placencia's traditional eco-tourism base that employs most people in the area by locally owned and operated businesses, crime, unfair competition and loss of local control.
